If you don't know a lot about Linux and network stuff you should get a copy of Ubuntu at first, get used to work with it, learn to love the command line and also about how network stuff works (TCP/IP, Client/Server, DNS and so on)

Once you learned these basics you will find dealing with the tools coming with Backtrack way easier and you will understand the principles behind them.

There is no easy path or shortcut to take if you want to really learn as with everything else in life.

Best advice is not to give up too easily or loose your heart.

I agree. Best advice is to "Try Harder" ;)

Backtrack is made up of a lot of different tools, some you may use and some you may not. For a great all round Pen Testing course using BackTrack check out Penetration Testing with Backtrack from Offensive Security.

Also have a look at the Metasploit Unleashed course, also from Offensive Security, this one is free and regularly updated.

For individual tutorials using the tools included securitytube, youtube and vimeo are great places to look.

I just want to concur that Aldeid is one of the coolest wikis on the entire planet, even if more than half of it is written in French

But yes if you can afford it -> OSCP <-- but you should prepare before you take it. MSFU is as allready mentioned a good start at least with metasploit.
